Hypnotherapy & How It Works

Let's forget the word "hypnosis" for a moment.

For many people, that word brings up unhelpful images of stage shows — being made to act out of character or "lose control." In reality, hypnotherapy is nothing like that. Don't worry, you won't be clucking like a chicken.

Hypnosis is simply a natural, relaxed state of focused attention — something you already experience many times a day. You might notice it driving somewhere familiar and arriving without remembering every turn, or being so absorbed in a book that you don't hear someone calling your name.

Hypnotherapy uses this same natural state, but with gentle guidance and purpose. In this calm, relaxed state your mind becomes more open to positive, supportive suggestions — allowing us to work with the patterns that sit beneath habits, anxiety, and confidence.

Working with the Subconscious

Change at the root, not just the symptoms.

Clinical hypnotherapy works by communicating with the subconscious mind — the part responsible for habits, beliefs, emotional responses, and automatic behaviours. Throughout life, especially in childhood, we absorb patterns from the world around us. These early "programmes" can shape how we think, feel, and respond as adults.

You may find yourself holding beliefs such as "I'm not good enough" or "I can't cope," often without consciously choosing them. Hypnotherapy allows us to gently access this deeper level of the mind and update those patterns — creating change at the root, rather than simply managing symptoms.

The Science

A different state, by design.

Hypnotherapy guides you into a Theta brainwave state — deeply relaxed yet focused, similar to the moments just before sleep.

4–8 Hz

Theta Brainwaves

Calm, receptive, and open to new ideas and learning.

Adaptive

Neuroplasticity

The brain forms new, healthier neural pathways.

Direct

Subconscious Access

The analytical mind softens, easing real change.

The Modalities

An integrative
toolkit.

I draw on a combination of approaches depending on what will best support you, working both at a deeper subconscious level and in a practical, supportive way.

Hypnosis

Clinical Hypnotherapy

A deeply relaxing and focused state where your mind becomes more open to positive change. You are always in control, but your busy, overthinking mind quietens so we can work directly with the subconscious — the part responsible for habits, fears, and emotional patterns. It's not about losing control — it's about gaining it.

  • Building confidence and self-belief
  • Letting go of phobias and anxiety
  • Breaking habits like smoking or vaping
  • Supporting emotional balance and women's wellbeing

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing

A gentle yet highly effective therapy that helps the brain process and release difficult experiences that may be 'stuck.' Using guided eye movements or tapping, we help your brain reprocess these experiences so they no longer feel overwhelming. Clients often find that things that once felt intense simply… don't anymore.

  • Phobias and fears
  • Anxiety and panic
  • Low self-confidence rooted in past experiences
  • Emotional triggers that feel hard to control

EFT

Emotional Freedom Technique

Often known as 'tapping,' EFT combines gentle tapping on specific points of the body with focused thoughts. It calms the nervous system and releases emotional intensity. Simple, empowering, and something you can use yourself between sessions.

  • Reducing anxiety and stress quickly
  • Managing cravings (including smoking/vaping)
  • Calming overwhelm
  • Building emotional resilience

CBT

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Coaching

Forward focus

Coaching is about helping you move forward with clarity, confidence, and purpose. While other therapies may focus on releasing what's holding you back, coaching focuses on where you want to go. Together we create a clear, supportive path toward your goals.

  • Building confidence and self-belief
  • Creating positive habits and routines
  • Navigating life transitions, including midlife and menopause
  • Feeling more in control and aligned with yourself
How It Feels

Not done to you — created together.

You remain aware and in control at all times. You can hear everything, and you can accept or reject any suggestions. Most clients describe the experience as feeling like a guided daydream or deep relaxation — calm, safe, and familiar.

When your mind is in this state it naturally shifts from being problem-focused to solution-focused. The process is not about forcing change — it's about allowing it.
