Phobias can feel overwhelming, as though your mind and body are responding to real danger even when you logically know you are safe. Whether it's a fear of flying, needles, driving, spiders, heights, or something more specific, phobias often create a powerful physical and emotional reaction that can feel difficult to control in the moment.
Over time, this fear response can begin to shape your choices. You may find yourself avoiding certain places, situations, or experiences, which can gradually limit your confidence, freedom, and enjoyment of life.
Your brain is designed to protect you. When it perceives a threat, it automatically activates the fight-or-flight response—often within seconds. This response is managed by the subconscious mind, meaning it can happen before you've had a chance to think logically.
Sometimes, the brain mistakenly associates a past experience, sensation, or memory with danger. From that point on, the fear response can be triggered automatically, even when there is no real risk present. This is why phobias can feel so immediate and so difficult to "talk yourself out of."
Hypnotherapy works by gently calming the nervous system and communicating directly with the subconscious mind, where these automatic fear responses are held.
Rather than forcing you to relive or repeatedly confront the fear, we focus on helping your mind create a new internal response—one that feels calmer, safer, and more in control. Over time, your brain can begin to update how it responds to the trigger, allowing the fear response to naturally reduce.
My approach integrates hypnotherapy and where appropriate, elements of EMDR-informed processing. Each session is tailored to you and your individual experience, so the work always feels safe, contained, and manageable.
This approach can help you to:
You will not be pushed to face your fear in an overwhelming way. Instead, we work with your mind at a pace that feels safe, helping change happen from within.
Phobias can take many forms. Some of the most common I support clients with include:
Phobias do not live in the logical part of the mind, which is why reassurance alone is rarely enough to shift them. Hypnotherapy helps access the deeper, subconscious patterns driving the response, allowing the nervous system to relearn what is safe.
Many clients notice meaningful change within a small number of sessions, as the mind begins to respond in a calmer and more flexible way.
